By Lord,
In a despatch No. 560 of the 5th instant I forwarded
a cony of the observations offered by His Majesty's Consul-
General at Canton on the despatch of vril 14th last from the
Governor of the straits "ettlemente to the Colonial Offi ce
regarding the protection in China of British subjects of
Chinese descent.

The copy of His Excelleng's despatch had not at
that time reached this Legation, but it has since arrived mrid
after giving it my careful consideration I have the honour to
add the following comments to those already made by Vr Jamient
with which I am in general agreement.
3 As Your Lordship is aware, this question of Chinese
British subjacta has been the subject of voluminous correspon-
dence extending over many years, and conflicting opinions on it;
Marquis Curson of Kedleston, K„G..., G.L.A.I., G.-I.N....
